Eagan, MN – Jason Lewis for Congress Campaign Manager Becky Alery released the following statement regarding Craig’s disappointing response to the murder of Mollie Tibbetts:
“This week an Iowa family lost their young daughter at the hands of an illegal immigrant. In response to that, Angie Craig talked about – surprise, surprise - anything but the issue at hand.
“Not only is Craig’s response wrongheaded but downright disrespectful.
“First off, Craig’s claims that Jason Lewis has not been focused on solving problems is blatantly false.
“Just a few months ago, Congressman Lewis voted for two immigration bills (including HR 6136 The Border Security & Immigration Reform Act) that not only would have allowed the DACA population to apply for documented status, but would have fixed family separation by maintaining the care and custody of aliens together while any charges were pending. In order to make certain these problems do not occur again and again, these bills also sought an end to catch and release, moved toward a merit-based system and sought to reinforce border security with funding for a new wall. Yet Democrats refused to compromise and ensured their defeat in the House.
“Rather than joining Jason Lewis and Republicans in Congress to work to fix our country’s immigration woes, Craig is following the lead of Pelosi, Ellison, Gillibrand, and her fellow far-left Democrats by refusing to work towards real solution, or put forth real ideas, thus allowing our immigration problems to inflate.
“What’s disappointing is that while Craig could have taken the opportunity to share her own views on immigration and national security – especially while claiming Lewis has no solutions – Craig pivots to…campaign finance reform. To conflate campaign finance reform with immigration and this horrific tragedy is politicking at its finest.
“Moreover, Craig’s unwillingness to be part of the solution is to be part of the problem and her refusal to even acknowledge a crime problem from open borders is especially concerning—because Mollie Tibbetts is not the only woman to lose her life at the hands of an illegal immigrant this month. According to ICE officials, a man who was once deported due to a history of criminal activity (including three drunken-driving convictions on his record and another conviction for domestic assault) illegally re-entered the United States and has now been charged for the brutal murder of a woman right here in Shakopee.
“So, the question remains (as they always seem to remain) – where does Angie Craig stand on immigration and national security? Does she support her campaign donor Senator Gillibrand who supports abolishing ICE? Does she stand with Nancy Pelosi in refusal to work with Republicans like Lewis to pass real immigration reform?
“Thinking about the Tibbetts family is not enough - we need to follow through on our immigration and national security reforms in Washington and we need to start now or these tragedies will continue.”
